Hercules (Gold Collection) Review

Hercules (Gold Collection) Feature

  • An outrageous odyssey of fun, fantasy and adventure unfolds in the hilarious hit film, Hercules - Disney's 35th animated triumph "brimming with comic surprise!" (Entertainment Weekly) Taken from the gods as a newborn, adopted on Earth, Hercules becomes an awkward, teenage pillar of strength. Trying to fit in, he discovers his dad is Zeus and home is Mount Olympus - if he can move from "zero
Not the egregious foul it seemed to be in theaters, Hercules stands up as an entertaining spritzer of an animated feature. The continual peppering of in-jokes and cultural references becomes less irksome on video. That there's no majesty or awe invested in the beloved Greek legends also seems less of an error. Also on the plus side is the bounciest Alan Menken music since Little Shop of Horrors. With Zeus's blood in his veins, young Hercules's amazing strength makes him an outcast (sorry, that still doesn't fly), so he trains with a satyr named Phil to become a hero. Along the way Herc meets Meg, a common mortal who falls hard for him. They're both against the jocular Hades, who has to destroy Hercules to take over Olympus. The hydra is the computer-animated set piece for this little number, a no-chance attempt to beat that wildebeest herd from The Lion King. --Keith Simanton

British artist/political cartoonist Gerald Scarfe was brought in to assist with character design, and he remained involved as an ongoing artistic advisor to the animators.

A fascinating and humorous slice-of-life look at two men's search for one of America's most quintessential and enduring cult phenomena - Bigfoot. Filmmaker Jay Delaney follows the exploits of Dallas and Wayne, two amateur Bigfoot researchers in a depressed Southern Ohio town who have dedicated their lives to proving that Bigfoot is real. The pair claims not only to have seen and photographed Bigfoot in the murky Appalachian forests, but also to have had mysterious encounters with the legendary beast. Despite financial hardships, health problems, family strife, and halfhearted acceptance from the mainstream Bigfoot community, Dallas and Wayne remain steadfast in their quest. This honest and often funny look at their lives shows that Bigfoot is very much alive and well in Dallas and Wayne's world. The film is more than a portrait of small town dreamers; it's an inspiring and humbling look at a quest for a small piece of the American dream.

He tells them that he is making a documentary, when in reality he has no intention of editing the footage into one cohesive movie. Unaware of this latter fact, many street artists from around the world agree to participate. Thierry even gets into the act by assisting them in creating the art. One of the artists that participates is the camera-shy Brit Banksy, who refuses to be shown on screen unless he is blacked out. Banksy does convince Thierry to use the footage to make a movie. In Thierry doing so, Banksy comes to the realization that Thierry is a lousy filmmaker, but he is an interesting character in an odd yet appealing way. So Banksy decides to use the footage and add additional material to make his own movie about Thierry's journey in this project. Since Thierry spent so much time involved in the process of street art, Banksy also convinces Thierry to become a street artist himself. Thierry reinvents himself as street artist MBW, an acronym for 'Mr. Brainwash'. Banksy, in the end, may regret this suggestion. ...Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) ( Opos exerhesthe apo to politirio )

Bait Shop Review

Bait Shop Feature

Bait Shop stars the eternally affable yet exasperated comedian Bill Engvall as Bill Dugan, owner of a homey but smalltime bait shop. Bill's job and self-respect are threatened when arrogant fishing celebrity Hot Rod Johnson (Billy Ray Cyrus, better known as Miley's dad) opens a massive fishing superstore right next door. Only by challenging Hot Rod in a bass fishing tournament can Bill set things right! Bait Shop is a bundle of clumsy cliches made somewhat tolerable by a likable cast (including outlaw country music singer Billy Joe Shaver as Bill's mentor) and an enthusiastic performance by Cyrus, who clearly enjoys being the bad guy for once. High points include Bill having a bar fight while dressed in a fish costume and Bill wrestling an obviously rubber bass into his boat. There are many declarations about how fishing used to be more pure and how friendship is the most important thing in life. Extras include a standard-issue making-of documentary, some beautiful shots of the local landscape (which, inexplicably, never got used in the movie itself), some understandably deleted scenes and some scenes of the cast goofing around. All in all, not much effort was put into making either the movie or the DVD. --Bret Fetzer

Bill Engvall, Billy Ray Cyrus, Billy Joe Shaver. Forced to pony up ,000 to keep the bank from foreclosing on his bait shop, a Southern bass master enters a fishing tournament and goes head-to-head against his bitter bait shop rival. Talk about reel" funny! 2008/color/85 min/PG/widescreen.
